What’s changing?

Refreshed repertoire lists for Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass, featuring a wide range of composers and offering greater choice of music than ever before

Violin:

  • Repertoire extended to 39 pieces per grade
  • Each grade includes a selection of new pieces alongside retained pieces from the 2020-2023 lists

Cello:

  • Repertoire extended to 39 pieces per grade
  • Initial Grade to Grade 5: each grade includes a selection of new pieces alongside retained pieces from 2020-2023 lists
  • Grades 6 to 8: each grade includes 9 new choices alongside all pieces retained from 2020-2023 lists

Viola and Double Bass:

  • Repertoire extended across the grades
  • the majority of the 2020-2023 Initial Grade to Grade 8 repertoire retained

For Practical Grades, the scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural-test requirements remain the same as for the 2020-2023 syllabus.

Syllabus validity

The Bowed Strings Syllabuses from 2024 come into effect on 1 January 2024.

  • Candidates can begin to present pieces from the 2024 repertoire lists from 1 January 2024.
  • Candidates worldwide can continue to present pieces from the 2020-2023 repertoire lists during the overlap period (see below).

Syllabus overlap

A one-year overlap period applies to the previous syllabus.

  • Candidates worldwide can present pieces from the 2020-2023 repertoire lists until 31 December 2024.
  • All three set pieces must be from the same syllabus.
