To help ensure that children leave primary school with a knowledge and understanding of the building blocks of music, Sing Up is expanding its Music scheme thanks to ABRSM funding. The Sing Up Music scheme was created last year to support the teaching of the primary music curriculum and develops core musicianship skills through singing. Sing Up Music uses 84 songs from Sing Up’s unique digital Song Bank to teach aspects of the music curriculum in a structured progression from the earliest stages of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage through to more complex musical concepts in Year 6. ‘A child’s first experience of music can be a magical one and the start of a journey that, with the right support, can transform their lives,’ said ABRSM’s Director of Strategic Development, Lincoln Abbotts. ‘We want to ensure every child has the opportunity to continue that exciting journey. That’s why we’re committed to building partnerships such as this one – to support music learning and teaching, and to ensure that as many children as possible have access to high quality musical opportunities from an early age.’ Later this year, a similar scheme supporting the teaching of music through singing from KS3 onwards will be made available to UK secondary schools with ABRSM’s support. ‘We’re delighted to be working with ABRSM on this exciting project,’ added Michelle James, Chief Executive of Sing Up. ‘Sing Up has a strong history of encouraging participation in singing activities at primary school and now we want to do more to ensure that singing activity supports teaching and learning in music and that pupils continue singing once they move into secondary school.’
